No interest in being an officer

Hello,

I'm a newbie but I wanted some clarification on the nomination/election process.  I am on a small board that is getting ready to hold officer elections.  One member is being considered for an officer position, and will be nominated, but is not interested in an officer position.  Can she prevent herself from being elected? She would like to continue being a board member.  If she cannot prevent her election into an officer position, can she simply resign from the officer position and remain on the board as a member?  What section in RROR describes this action?

Thanks in advance.

No, but, if elected, she can refuse to serve.

She can also let everyone know that, if elected, she will refuse to serve. That may cause most members to vote for someone else.

See also "Shermanesque Statement".

If she's already a board member it's unlikely that her refusal to serve as an officer would change that.

If she cannot prevent herself from being elected, she can still immediately "decline" the position, which is simpler than resignation, as she will never have actually been in the office.

But sometimes, the bylaws require that a member, if elected, must accept the position, so check for that possibility.  It's rare, but it sometimes occurs.
