Lauriemcg Posted December 15, 2014 at 02:01 AM Report Share Posted December 15, 2014 at 02:01 AM I'd be interested in having the assistance of a parliamentarian to assist with some upcoming meetings. We are just learning about Roberts Rules and will be asking the membership to approve newly revised bylaws. I would like to know we are treading the path correctly and think someone with experience would be a help. Is there an organization or resource I could go to in searching for this service in our area? I must not know where to look, because even tho I leave in a state capital where you'd think there would be lots of need, I sure couldn't find anything like what I was looking for. I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions on how to go about looking for this service. Thanks

You may have more luck with the referral services of NAP or AIP... or you may not. It depends on what state you're in.

You may have more luck with the referral services of NAP or AIP... or you may not. It depends on what state you're in. You might let us know where you live and also join this forum as a member.... which has already been suggested to you.... so that members can contact you via the private message feature available to members. If we know where you are, someone in your area may be willing to suggest someone. There are many excellent parliamentarians who are not listed with the AIP or NAP referral services. Since you are in a state capital, you might also try contacting the parliamentarians or clerks of your state legislature. The chairmen and executive directors of your state political parties can also be a source of information.

The New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas of Louisiana have several credentialed parliamentarians from both associations in their referral lists. I'm not sure about that idea. Parliamentary procedure in a state legislature varies substantially in many respects from parliamentary procedure in an ordinary society, and those who are familiar with one are not necessarily familiar with the other. Most state legislatures don't even use RONR as their parliamentary authority, and even in those which do, it's largely superseded by extensive customized rules. Most state legislatures don't even use RONR as their parliamentary authority, and even in those which do, it's largely superseded by extensive customized rules.Josh, I'm well aware of that, although our guest may not be. However, I imagine that the senate and house parliamentarians or clerks have personal knowledge of some parliamentarians in the area who might be of help. That was the object of my comment. And, even though the legislative bodies might not use RONR, their parliamentarians might nonetheless be very familiar with it, just as many parliamentarians are familiar with several parliamentary authorities. AIP even requires a working knowledge of several parliamentary authorities in order to become credentialed. I was simply suggesting several avenues our poster might utilize in trying to find a parliamentarian in his area who he can work with since he seems to have struck out with the NAP and AIP websites and with his internet search. Richard Brown Posted December 17, 2014 at 04:01 PM Report Share Posted December 17, 2014 at 04:01 PM Thanks, so I have joined the site now. I'm fine with being contacted via private message if that is helpful. I live in Washington State. I will follow up on your other suggestions as well. Thanks Congratulations on becoming a member of this, the world's premier discussion forum on parliamentary procedure and RONR! You'll find the forum much easier to use as a member. I'll message you privately with some information that might help you in your quest to find a knowledgeable parliamentarian in your area. Hopefully, others will do so as well. The NAP member website shows 56 members in the state of Washington, although none in Olympia. The AIP website shows one regular (non-credentialed) member in Olympia. I didn't do a statewide search on their website....it's a bit harder to do than on the NAP website. One PRP who is a very frequent contributor to this forum lives in Spokane, but I understand that Spokane is about 300 miles from Olympia. You don't mind driving all day to get there, do you? The referral service from NAP should be of assistance. The NAP member website shows 56 members in the state of Washington, although none in Olympia. There are none in Olympia specifically, but there appear to be a few PRPs in Seattle or the surrounding area, which is not an unreasonable distance.
