Guest Guest Posted January 13, 2015 at 09:29 PM Report Share Posted January 13, 2015 at 09:29 PM Our by-laws say "The persons elected as president and vice-president shall not be elected secretary or treasurer." Does this also mean the president and vice-president can't be secretary per tem or treasurer per tem.
Edgar Guest Posted January 13, 2015 at 09:31 PM Report Share Posted January 13, 2015 at 09:31 PM Our by-laws say "The persons elected as president and vice-president shall not be elected secretary or treasurer." Does this also mean the president and vice-president can't be secretary per tem or treasurer per tem. Strictly speaking, no. Though you probably wouldn't want to select the president as secretary pro tem. But if both the president and vice-president are present, and the secretary is absent, the assembly could select the vice-president to serve as secretary pro tem. There's no such thing as a treasurer pro tem. The two "essential" officers at any meeting are a presiding officer and a secretary. If the persons who normally hold these offices are absent, a temporary ("pro tem") person is selected. They only serve during the meeting. Not before; not after. jstackpo Posted January 13, 2015 at 09:33 PM Report Share Posted January 13, 2015 at 09:33 PM As gets said here kinda regularly (and we hope not too dismissively) it is up to your organization to interpret your own bylaws. See p. 588 for some how-to hints in that direction. For the record, our favorite dismissive response is: They're your bylaws; you tell us!

Not a favorite of mine. I thought we were done with that dismissive response.
