Edgar Guest Posted January 20, 2015 at 03:44 PM Report Share Posted January 20, 2015 at 03:44 PM A tie vote means the motion is defeated (just as if the vote was 3-5 or 0-8). It could be "Reconsidered" at the current meeting or "Renewed" (made again) at any subsequent meeting. Edited at 2:00 PM to add: Tie votes can occur even with a board with an odd number of members. One of the members might be absent or could simply abstain from voting (i.e. choose not to vote). Note, too, that your board has eight members including one ex-officio member (not seven members plus one ex-officio member). An ex-officio member is as much a member as the others. See FAQ #2. Gary Novosielski Posted January 21, 2015 at 01:55 PM Report Share Posted January 21, 2015 at 01:55 PM If a board has 7 members + one member ex-officeo who votes and a vote ends in a 4-4 tie. What is the procedure? A tie vote is less than a majority, so the motion is defeated, the same as any other motion that fails to achieve a majority.
