Edgar Guest Posted January 24, 2015 at 01:13 AM Report Share Posted January 24, 2015 at 01:13 AM Nothing in RONR prohibits a person from being a candidate for one office while holding another. In fact, nothing in RONR prohibits the same person from holding more than one office at the same time, though some combinations (e.g. president and vice-president or president and secretary) can be problematic. Your rules may vary.

Well, I didn't say it would be problematic for the same person to hold the offices of secretary and vice-president (though it's probably not a good idea). RONR says that the two "essential" offices at any meeting are the presiding officer (e.g. the president or chair) and the secretary. So while it's not forbidden for the same person to hold both offices, it's not a good idea. And, since the primary role of the vice-president is to serve in the president's absence, it's not a good idea for the same person to hold both of those offices. On the other hand, it's not uncommon, in small organizations, for the same person to serve as, say, both secretary and treasurer.
Andy Travis Posted January 24, 2015 at 03:08 AM Report Share Posted January 24, 2015 at 03:08 AM Ah, yes now that you have refreshed my memory about the "essential" people needed at a meeting this makes sense.
