Survey responses vs Member vote

Recommended Posts

Guest Pat Hendershott

Our coop is just beginning the process of electing our 1st Board. In the meantime a survey was sent to the members to get their response for installing a pricy piece of equipment. A majority of the respondents supported the equipment. Several did not respond at all. This equipment may not be purchased before the Board is elected. My question is, if we have a Board in place can this survey be considered a majority vote .

A survey is essentially a straw poll.  It "is not in order because it neither adopts nor rejects a measure...."  RONR (11th ed.), p. 429, l. 17-18.  Of course, someone could move to install the equipment...but the survey is not a vote.

The results of the survey may well be of value to the board in making its decision, however.

I agree. RONR is referring on page 429 (cited in post #2) to motions to take a straw poll during a meeting. There is nothing wrong with a board sending out a straw poll to members in an effort to determine their views on something, and, of course, the board remains free to reject the views thus expressed.
