vocal endorsement of nominee during election

During a Toastmasters club election of officers, I voiced my support to a nominee.  At the time I was the club president but was not the presiding officer of the nomination or the election process.    I was later challenged by the nominee who lost the election that my vocal support as club president caused undue influence over the election process.  Was I wrong?  Or, was it inappropriate since we are a small club?

Barring exceptional circumstances (like a bylaws provision), you should normally have been presiding over the nominations and elections.  In that case it could be considered improper for you to have expressed an opinion.

But as you were not even in the chair at the time, the objection sounds pretty self-serving.  One wonders if that member would have objected to the outcome if he had won.
