Guest J. Alvarado Posted June 7, 2015 at 02:08 AM Report Share Posted June 7, 2015 at 02:08 AM When two people are sharing a position, vice president for example, do they each have a vote? Or would they each have half a vote? Or does only one person sharing the office get the vote? Sometimes having two people share an office is the only way we can get members to commit to holding office, then they can share the responsibilities. Hieu H. Huynh Posted June 7, 2015 at 02:59 AM Report Share Posted June 7, 2015 at 02:59 AM In RONR, it's one person, one vote.
Weldon Merritt Posted June 7, 2015 at 04:10 AM Report Share Posted June 7, 2015 at 04:10 AM Also, you can't have two people share a single office unless your bylaws (unwisely) allow such an arrangement. What you need to do instead is find out what it is about the office that makes members reluctant to accept the position. If it involves too many duties, then figure out a way to spread the duties among more officers. In the case of the vice president, for example, you might amend the bylaws to have a first vp and a second vp, with the duties split between the positions. Richard Brown Posted June 7, 2015 at 04:13 PM Report Share Posted June 7, 2015 at 04:13 PM One of our regular posters, JDStackpole, has written extensively about the problems with co-anythings. Hoperully, he will see this thread and contribute to it. This statement on page 176 of RONR is referring to "Co-chairs" of a committee, but it is equally applicable to sharing all other positions: "The anomalous title "co-chairman" should be avoided, as it causes impossible dilemmas in attempts to share the functions of a single position." It ought to explain how many votes they get there, too.
