Our motion to carry on business limits expenditures to $1500.Can we use email to gain membership approval even though we do not yet have that in our bylaws? No. Your options are to tough it out for the summer or to exceed the expenditure limit despite the fact that it's beyond your authority to do so, and pray that the membership will ratify the expenditure at its next meeting. Keep in mind that the consequences if the expenditure is not approved are dire - those responsible could be disciplined up to and including expulsion from the society, and they could be forced to pay the unauthorized portion of the expenditures themselves. While an e-mail approval would not be official, it could be a good way to gauge whether there is sufficient support that the expenditure is likely to be ratified later. I only ask this because our Board has a limit as well, however in the event of an emergency where our property is at risk of being damaged we are allowed to spend beyond our limit to protect the property.
