Guest Jerry-Mac Johnston Posted June 25, 2015 at 02:00 PM Report Share Posted June 25, 2015 at 02:00 PM may a member make a 'new business' motion before the call for new business? and if so what is the procedure for that?
jstackpo Posted June 25, 2015 at 03:59 PM Report Share Posted June 25, 2015 at 03:59 PM I suppose he could try, but an efficient chair would (politely) ask the member to hold off until New Business, and then turn to the "next business in order", whatever it might be due to come up before new business, like something postponed from the last meeting, &c.. Gary Novosielski Posted June 25, 2015 at 05:04 PM Report Share Posted June 25, 2015 at 05:04 PM I suppose it could be done as a motion to Suspend the Rules and consider, out of its normal order, the following motion... But that would require 2/3 agreement to do so.
Josh Martin Posted June 25, 2015 at 05:57 PM Report Share Posted June 25, 2015 at 05:57 PM may a member make a 'new business' motion before the call for new business? and if so what is the procedure for that? There are a couple of ways to do it.-Suspend the Rules to take up the motion out of its proper order. This requires a 2/3 vote.-Lay on the Table every motion, in succession, until you get to New Business. This only requires a majority vote, but it has the downside that there will be a lot of votes instead of just one, and you'll have a big mess of motions to Take from the Table when you're done.So unless the member feels it's really important to consider this motion right away and believes a lot of other members feel likewise, he's probably better off just waiting for New Business.
