Yes, but the member is not obligated  to do so.  It might be better if a few board members, rather than the board itself, ask the member to resign.  If he won't resign voluntarily and it is desired to impose some sort of punishment, you would need to resort to disciplinary procedures.  RONR devotes 26 pages to it in chapter XX.   If you have customized disciplinary procedures in your bylaws, those provisions trump whatever is in RONR and should be followed.   It can get very technical and complicated.

I'm curious how his is done in the form of a motion, much less a proper request directed through the chair?  An example of either would be appreciated.  (though I'm not directing this at you personally, Godelfan)
