Guest Amelia Posted June 23, 2016 at 04:44 PM Report Share Posted June 23, 2016 at 04:44 PM Our bylaws do not have a provision that defines quorum. At our meetings, we say that quorum is established. How is quorum determined and established if we don't have a provision? Is there some type of default percentage? Thank you for any assistance. Heading to Barnes and Noble this evening to pick up a new book!
Dan Honemann Posted June 23, 2016 at 04:51 PM Report Share Posted June 23, 2016 at 04:51 PM (edited) A quorum is more than half of your members (assuming you have some means of determining how many there are). Edited June 23, 2016 at 04:54 PM by Daniel H. Honemann Added the parenthetical phrase.

Guest Quest Posted May 4, 2017 at 02:42 AM Report Share Posted May 4, 2017 at 02:42 AM What if your bylaws says a quorum is 15% of membership?

Greg Goodwiller, PRP Posted May 4, 2017 at 05:21 PM Report Share Posted May 4, 2017 at 05:21 PM Additionally, depending on the type of organization, there may be applicable state law. Many states have adopted a non-profit corporation act, and one of the provisions of this act may be a meeting quorum in cases where the organization's bylaws do not stipulate one. State law "trumps" Robert's Rules. You might need to check with an attorney.

Then a quorum is 15% of the membership. The original poster's question was what the quorum was if the bylaws did not specify a quorum.
