Guest Zev Posted June 9, 2018 at 07:14 AM Report Share Posted June 9, 2018 at 07:14 AM Would it not be prudent at the first opportunity to amend the bylaws and make explicit that new members are accepted only after a majority vote of the assembly? I have never heard of an organization accepting new members without a vote by either the assembly or the board.
katydid Posted June 9, 2018 at 11:38 AM Report Share Posted June 9, 2018 at 11:38 AM I totally agree Zev. In hindsight there are many things in our bylaws that need to be amended
jstackpo Posted June 9, 2018 at 12:06 PM Report Share Posted June 9, 2018 at 12:06 PM In many organizations that I run into "Pay your dues" is a necessary and sufficient condition for membership. Some require a proficiency test, however. It varies all over the lot.

Oh, it's quite common, Zev. As Dr. Stackpole said in the post above, paying your dues is frequently all that is necessary to join an organization. Bruce Lages Posted June 9, 2018 at 01:56 PM Report Share Posted June 9, 2018 at 01:56 PM Also, Katydid, if you're going to work on amending your bylaws - the article you quoted made voting privileges conditional on being 'in good standing'; yet nothing in that article defined what 'in good standing' means. Being delinquent in dues makes someone an 'inactive member' with loss of voting privileges. Is that intended to be the definition of not 'in good standing', or is there some other section of your bylaws that defines what 'in good standing' means?
