Guest JamesMoore Posted May 13, 2019 at 04:46 PM Report Share Posted May 13, 2019 at 04:46 PM Can a member make a motion in absentia? We have a member who will not be at our next meeting and they just sent an email with a motion to the group stating this was a motion they were making for the next meeting. Richard Brown Posted May 13, 2019 at 05:21 PM Report Share Posted May 13, 2019 at 05:21 PM No. Unless you have a specialized rule allowing it, a member must be physically present in order to make a motion. However, the member who wants the motion made may have someone else who IS present make the motion if he can find someone willing to do so. But the member making the motion will be making it as his own motion, not as a motion of the absent member.
Guest JamesMoore Posted May 13, 2019 at 05:33 PM Report Share Posted May 13, 2019 at 05:33 PM Can you direct me to where in RONR this is stated? I know I am going to get some pushback on this and would like to be able to pull it up and present it.
jstackpo Posted May 13, 2019 at 05:38 PM Report Share Posted May 13, 2019 at 05:38 PM Start with page 1 (!) in RONR... Feel free to skip all the way to line 12 if you (or your push-backers) are impatient. And the footnote.

One thing the member who agrees to present this motion as their own needs to keep in mind is he or she cannot speak against the motion in debate (RONR p. 393). So, the member needs to be in favor of the motion or at least be willing not to speak against it.
