External and internal title

For a non-profit religious organization, do the internal and external titles of a paid employee need to be the same? Can Acting or Interim be dropped from external communications while the person remains in acting or interim position? If so how can this be done? Does it need Board approval or anything else? Looking for what guidance Roberts Rules of Order gives, if any, on this matter.
