Guest Jen Posted June 9, 2020 at 10:39 PM Report Share Posted June 9, 2020 at 10:39 PM Hi, we have our annual elections next week, with our installations supposed to be happening at our July meeting (pursuant to the Bylaws). For several of the Executive Board positions, nobody is running. This includes the position of President. There is nothing in the bylaws that addresses this situation. The only thing I can think of is to run the election next week for those positions for which people are running and then adjourn to a special meeting before the regular July meeting. Is that correct? But what if nobody ever agrees to run for those positions?
Atul Kapur Posted June 9, 2020 at 10:54 PM Report Share Posted June 9, 2020 at 10:54 PM The commonest answer on this forum is: "Consider dissolving the organization." This is a sign of lack of adequate interest in the organization. The ramifications of this can often spark enough interest to generate volunteers. Alternatively, nominate people. Even though they may not have thought of it themselves, if nominated or, taking it the next step, if elected, they may agree to serve. Richard Brown Posted June 10, 2020 at 12:24 AM Report Share Posted June 10, 2020 at 12:24 AM Guest Jen, I agree with Dr. Kapur's answer, but to answer your specific question, yes, it is permissible (but not required) to elect those officers you can at the regular meeting and then postpone the remainder of the elections to an adjourned meeting to take place prior to your July installation meeting. However, when do the newly elected officers actually take office? Unless the bylaws specify otherwise, elections take effect immediately and the new officers are "in office" the instant they are elected. An installation ceremony is merely ceremonial and is not required and has no effect on when they actually take office unless the bylaws specify that it is at the July meeting or at the installation ceremony. So, check your bylaws carefully to see if they say anything about when the newly elected officers actually assume office.
Gary Novosielski Posted June 12, 2020 at 09:36 PM Report Share Posted June 12, 2020 at 09:36 PM I'm surprised no one has suggested simply holding the election anyway, with only the write-in spaces (you do have write-in spaces don't you?) for the offices with no candidates. It is not inconceivable that someone would get a majority vote and then agree to serve. And if that did not occur after a ballot or two, it would still be in order to postpone further proceedings until an adjourned meeting or the next regular meeting.
