Guest Claire Dubonte Posted July 30, 2020 at 12:27 PM Report Share Posted July 30, 2020 at 12:27 PM Is it possible to bring an item to a vote that is not on the agenda after the agenda has been approved? We do not have an agenda item specifically for new business.

Jennifer Zigler Posted July 30, 2020 at 12:37 PM Report Share Posted July 30, 2020 at 12:37 PM Would that require a 2/3 majority or a simple majority? I am seeing conflicting views online.

Jennifer Zigler Posted July 30, 2020 at 12:48 PM Report Share Posted July 30, 2020 at 12:48 PM NM... RONR says whichever is smaller at the time of the meeting.
Dan Honemann Posted July 30, 2020 at 12:58 PM Report Share Posted July 30, 2020 at 12:58 PM The question asked is "Is it possible to bring an item to a vote that is not on the agenda after the agenda has been approved?" The only fact provided is "We do not have an agenda item specifically for new business." I'm afraid that "NM... RONR says whichever is smaller at the time of the meeting" won't do for an answer. 🙂. Rob Elsman Posted July 30, 2020 at 01:59 PM Report Share Posted July 30, 2020 at 01:59 PM Unless the adopted agenda assigned the hour at which to adjourn, the completion of the adopted order of business for the meeting would leave the assembly in the same position it would be in if it had no order of business at all. In this case, any business of any class could be brought before the assembly without permission, provided previous notice were not required. The proper way to prevent the introduction of further business would be the adoption of a motion to Adjourn.

I agree with this PROVIDED the society does not have a bylaw provision or special rule of order which prohibits new business not on the agenda from being introduced at a meeting. Some organizations do have a rule prohibiting the introduction of business which has not been given previous notice or is not listed on the agenda.
