Marcy Dubroff Posted January 26, 2021 at 08:17 PM Report Posted January 26, 2021 at 08:17 PM I belong to a standing committee that has, as its charge, the responsibility of creating a plan to engage area youth in the larger group's activities. One of the things that this group oversees is the administration of a yearly scholarship (solicitation of applicants and selection of recipients). It has been proposed by the group as a whole (not the standing committee) that a special committee be established to examine the efficacy of this scholarship. Is it proper for such an evaluative group to be established to look at one piece of a standing committee's work/recommendations or should the evaluation take place internally in the standing committee? I ask because the recommendations put forth by the standing committee are voted on each year by the group at large, so it seems improper to single out one item from that for further scrutiny rather than sending it back to the standing committee for analysis. I cannot seem to find any guidance on this in RRoO. Quote

George Mervosh Posted January 26, 2021 at 08:22 PM Report Posted January 26, 2021 at 08:22 PM (edited) 1 minute ago, George Mervosh said: "A special committee may not be appointed to perform a task that falls within the assigned function of an existing standing committee." RONR (12th ed.), 50:10 I'm not sure we can determine here whether the proposal to create this special committee runs afoul of this rule. Edited January 26, 2021 at 08:23 PM by George Mervosh Quote
