Guest Beverly Posted February 8, 2021 at 08:04 PM Report Posted February 8, 2021 at 08:04 PM Does a standing committee take an action without making a motion to the assembly? Do they have the right to create an event with time and dates without the approval of the assembly? Example: The committee wants have a ball, create the event and schedule it without bringing it before the assembly. Can this be done? Quote

Example: The committee wants have a ball, create the event and schedule it without bringing it before the assembly. Can this be done? It depends. It depends on whether your committee is created "with power". In other words, do the bylaws or the motion which created the committee give it the power to actually put on an event, or only to study it and make recommendations? If you have the current 12th edition of RONR, see sections 13:8 and 50:5 regarding committees "with power". Quote
Guest Beverly Posted February 8, 2021 at 08:34 PM Report Posted February 8, 2021 at 08:34 PM Yes I have the edition. Our bylaws do not mention “with power”. Our committee report template has a place for recommendations for the assembly. Thanks for the information. Quote
Richard Brown Posted February 8, 2021 at 08:49 PM Report Posted February 8, 2021 at 08:49 PM You don’t really need any fancy words to authorize the committee to act with power. A simple motion that “the entertainment committee be authorized to put on the Christmas party with a budget of $250“ is really all you need. If you want to get fancier, have at it, but it’s really not necessary. 🙂 Quote
