voice vote and Nominations from the floor

In our association, the Board of Director positions are elected at our annual meeting by a majority of those members present that vote. Our bylaws provide for a nominating committee that recommends one nominee for each BOD position. Our Bylaws also allow for nominations from the floor, which has only happened once. The method of voting is not prescribed in the Bylaws. Our custom is to have a voice vote because there is only one candidate for each office. We anticipate that there will be nominations from the floor this year.

I understand from RONR that the candidates are voted on in the order of nomination. In the case of nominations from the floor, do we still do a voice vote due to custom or can we have a hand or standing vote to be able to make an accurate count?

When conducting a voice vote, all of the methods for verifying the accuracy of the vote as described in RONR, 12th ed., 45:14 may be utilized.

And, of course, you can also vote by secret ballot. The president can suggest that method from the beginning or a member can make a motion to do so. It requires a majority vote to order that the vote be by secret ballot if there is an objection. I would think the members might prefer that method if some of the elections are contested.
