Guest Ellie Goodman Posted May 19, 2023 at 05:45 PM Report Share Posted May 19, 2023 at 05:45 PM At our last club meeting we had nominations for board positions. One member accepted the nomination at the meeting, then a week later asked to decline the nomination as they no longer wanted the position. But later asked to be back on the ballot for the position. What is the Roberts rules for this situation? Is the member still able to be on the ballot since she resented then reaccepted?

Nothing in Robert's Rules would prevent the member from being nominated again. It would seem, however, that your organization may have its own rules on this matter, so we may need to know what those rules say to conclusively answer this question. Further, even to the extent the member was somehow prevented from being nominated, write-in votes are permitted unless the bylaws provide otherwise. It does have rules for declining an office after having been elected to it, but that's a different situation. All this could have been avoided simply by not asking nominees whether or not they "accept".

Rescind means to reverse a previously passed motion. What you probably mean is to withdraw from nomination. RONR has no rule for this because, referring to my previous reply, it has no provision for accepting or declining nominations. When someone is nominated, they stay nominated. They can ask people not to vote for them, but they could conceivably still be elected. Then, if they like, they could decline the office. Since apparently no formal action has been taken, there is nothing to prevent her from being on the ballot. I'm not sure I'd vote for someone that indecisive, but that's just me. 😐 Edited May 23, 2023 at 08:26 PM by Gary Novosielski
