agenda item

A item was brought up for consideration. The board failed to make any motion, what happens to that item?

Basically, items of business regularly come before an assembly by means of motions or requests. However, I can't help but suspect that there's more to this than I know. Maybe, with more facts, I could give a more appropriate answer to your particular circumstances.

Nothing.

If there is no motion made (and either adopted or rejected), then all you had was:

• an interesting topic which produced no interest;

• an action item which produced no action.

I envision something like this might have occurred:

"The next item of business is repairs to the main building. Any ideas?"

"We ought to do something about the building maintenance."

"Yeah. Something needs to be done."

"It's got to be cost effective."

"We should have multiple bids before choosing a repair company."

"We can't let summer come and go and do nothing."

"No sirree, Bob!"

"Not this year. No way."

(Awkward pause)

"The next item of business is the playground upgrade. Here is the committee report."

Etc.

And, nothing is done.

An item of business comes, and goes, without action being taken.

Q. Does the above dialogue match what happened in your meeting?
