Guest Laura Posted June 3, 2010 at 04:39 PM Report Share Posted June 3, 2010 at 04:39 PM Our congregation voted to try something for a year on a trial basis. They may be reconsidering this trial motion. Do we need a 2/3 majority vote to recind this action or is a simple majority enough.
Chris Harrison Posted June 3, 2010 at 04:41 PM Report Share Posted June 3, 2010 at 04:41 PM Depends on if previous notice was given prior to the motion to Rescind being considered. See RONR pp. 293-299.

Do we need a 2/3 majority vote to recind this action or is a simple majority enough. The motion to rescind requires a two-thirds vote, a vote of a majority of the entire membership or, with previous notice, a majority vote. The fact that there was a trial period is immaterial (other than that once the trial period ends, it'll be too late to do anything with the motion). Guest Laura Posted June 3, 2010 at 05:15 PM Report Share Posted June 3, 2010 at 05:15 PM We are still in the trial period so that is why we are wondering about the 2/3 vote. Thanks!

Thanks! The unexecuted part of the motion can be rescinded, but what is irrevocably done is done.
Guest Victor Posted June 3, 2010 at 09:05 PM Report Share Posted June 3, 2010 at 09:05 PM Does this not require a motion to reconsider action previously taken...and be proposes by a member who voted with the majority?
Rob Elsman Posted June 3, 2010 at 09:08 PM Report Share Posted June 3, 2010 at 09:08 PM Does this not require a motion to reconsider action previously taken...and be proposes by a member who voted with the majority? As I understand the facts, the time within which a motion to Reconsider the vote can be made has already expired. See RONR (10th ed.), p. 305, ll. 26-35.
