sophiiblu Posted July 7, 2010 at 09:16 PM Report Share Posted July 7, 2010 at 09:16 PM Please help!I was recently elected to a vp office that has, as part of its responsibilities, a committee chair attached to that. But the committee is also stacked with people who are working to stymie the process. My question: does the committee chair have the power to decide a course of action if it is in keeping with the overall direction of the organization? Does the committee have the power to overrule the chair, and if so, under what circumstances?
jstackpo Posted July 7, 2010 at 09:30 PM Report Share Posted July 7, 2010 at 09:30 PM Unfortunately (for you, but not for civilization at large) majority rules in committees as well as general assembly meetings. It's called "democracy". ;-)The real question is how much power the bylaws give to the committee -- can it "do" things or does it only make proposals, give advice, &c. to the general membership at membership meetings. No.Does the committee have the power to overrule the chair, and if so, under what circumstances?Yes. Always. Under all circumstances. A committee chairman is powerless.
