Guest Jill Moore Posted July 18, 2010 at 08:35 PM Report Share Posted July 18, 2010 at 08:35 PM At a monthly meeting 3 months ago and issue was voted on, now a member who was not present does not agree with the decision and is calling for a revote. Do we need to honor the request?
Trina Posted July 18, 2010 at 08:46 PM Report Share Posted July 18, 2010 at 08:46 PM If the motion 3 months ago did not pass, any member can simply make the motion again, as if it had never been made before. If the motion passed, any member may make a motion to amend or rescind the motion (this can only be done to the extent that the motion has not yet been fully executed). The motion to rescind, or amend something previously adopted, has a higher voting threshold -- two-thirds vote without notice OR majority vote with notice OR majority vote of the entire membership. You don't 'revote' per se, but an issue can often be brought before the assembly again by one of the above methods. The fact that the member wasn't present at the original vote is irrelevant.See RONR pp. 293-299 for further explanation of the motion to rescind or amend something previously adopted.
