Guest Stephen Posted August 18, 2010 at 10:38 PM Report Share Posted August 18, 2010 at 10:38 PM In our organization, we establish a nominations committee to pick potential candidates for various officer positions. In our by-laws, it states the following: "The nominating committee will report at the August General Membership meeting. Additional nominations will be taken from the floor at the General Membership meeting."In this meeting, the nominating committee nor the chair solicited additional nominations from the floor. We identified the error after the meeting was over. Is our only option to call for a special General Membership meeting to obtain additional nominations from the floor and then cease all nominations? Can this be done by email? Our next General Membership meeting is in October, 2010 and, according to our by-laws, this is the meeting were the new officers are established. Any advice is appreciated. hmtcastle Posted August 18, 2010 at 10:44 PM Report Share Posted August 18, 2010 at 10:44 PM Can this be done by email? Perhaps. But you can open (or re-open) nominations at the election meeting. Write-in votes (for non-nominated candidates) are also permitted.

Nominations can be re-opened anytime prior to the election.

hmtcastle Posted August 19, 2010 at 01:41 PM Report Share Posted August 19, 2010 at 01:41 PM By email, can the chair request additional nominations and then close nominations by a specific date and time? Thanks for all your comments so far.Nominations are made at meetings by members who are present. The chair does not have the unilateral authority to open or close nominations. Like most things, that's up to the assembly.
