joevinny Posted September 27, 2010 at 05:17 PM Report Share Posted September 27, 2010 at 05:17 PM Our organization is having a meeting tonight (Sept. 27, 2010) to drop an individual's membership at the individual's request. The rules of our organization state that such a request should be granted only after the individual has been personally contacted and encouraged to retain their membership in the organization. Are there any meeting rules that apply if the effort has not been made to encourage the individual to retain their membership?
George Mervosh Posted September 27, 2010 at 05:23 PM Report Share Posted September 27, 2010 at 05:23 PM You can raise a point of order (RONR, p. 240ff) that the rule was not followed.

Can a request be made to present evidence of the effort? You can ask him what the effort was if that's all he says (he'll probably just tell you what effort was put forth), but if he says he called the guy personally or something then it's time to let it go. Keep any questions or requests reasonable. Make sense?
Rev Ed Posted September 27, 2010 at 06:07 PM Report Share Posted September 27, 2010 at 06:07 PM You cannot force a member to retain their membership. If the member has been given a chance to inform the Board that he/she has "cooled off" and decided to stay on as a member, I do not see any other reasonable outcome other then to accept the resignation. We do not want to try and "Force" them to retain membership, just give them the opportunity to rethink their request and resovle any problems before the board makes a final decision. Thanks.
