Can the president remove a paid employee (steward) because he thinks the employee is hiding information?

The steward was elected a few years ago and has held the job since

This is how the bylaw is reads:

Club officers at the first officers' meeting in January shall assign the steward his duties and responsibilities. If the position of steward becomes vacant, the position will be posted for at least seven days. The officers will elect a steward at the following Monday business meeting.

Only if your bylaws give your president this authority (which, from what little you've cited, they don't).

You might also want to figure out if the steward is an officer, a paid employee, or both. How you get rid of an employee is not necessarily how you get rid of an officer.

In any event, RONR has nothing to say about stewards.
