amending a motion

When a member moves to make a ammendment to the original motion and the vote carries what happens to the original motion? for instance if the ammended motion is to table the motion so that the board of directors can look into the matter further and come back with answers.

Tabling, Referring to a the Board, and the like are not amendments. Amendments add, remove, or change the wording of the motion. When a motion is referred (which is what I am assuming you want to do), it goes to the body it is referred to and that body is to report back (best to give them a deadline). If the body does nothing or is taking too long, a motion to discharge the committee can be made.

If you want the Board of Directors to look into a matter, you should Refer it to them. Tabling is not what you would use for this.

What happens to the motion in that case is nothing. For the moment, you don't have to do anything until they look into it, come up with answers, and then send it all back to you. When you get it back, it is in the same condition as when it left, except now you have more answers and can deal with it in a more informed way. They may recommend some amendments to it.

Speaking of which...

Amending is different from referring. While you are dealing with the motion (the term is--the motion is "pending"), the group can amend the motion, which means to change it. You can change one punctuation mark, one word, a sentence, a paragraph, or the amend the whole dang thing with a complete replacement. Or anything in between. If you offer an amendment, and the vote on the amendment carries, it means you have agreed to the change, and the pending motion is now changed, but it's still not passed. If the vote on the amendment fails, the motion is not changed.

But either way, it's still "pending", so it's typically still open for more discussion, or more amendments. If the original motion has been amended, the amended motion is now what is under discussion.

When you've amended it so that you have it just the way you (or a majority of you) want it, you then do a vote on it to see if it passes or not.
