Installation of new members

Our old bylaws state that new officers will "assume their elected office, duties and responsibilities after formal installation at the November year-end awards banquet". However, our annual banquet has now been moved to February and the existing officers want to remain in place until then. According to ROR, shouldnt the new officers be initiated and resume duties in November? The By Laws have no provision for changing the year end banquet date.

Interesting.

You have a rule which two criteria: (a.) time; (b.) event

Q. What shall you do when you have #a but not #b? Or #b but not #a?

Q. Since your bylaws have "no provision for chaning the year-end banquet date," then what makes you think the event won't be held in November?

Q. What makes you think the February event is legitimate?

Q. Hey! Who in the world did this "moving"?

Yes, but your Bylaws seem to state otherwise, and your Bylaws supersede RONR. But, as noted, your Bylaws also say the banquet is to be in November, not February. It's ultimately up to your organization to interpret its own Bylaws. See RONR, 10th ed., pgs. 570-573 for some Principles of Interpretation.
