We recently had an election of officers and no candidate received the majority vote. It was stated that we had to have another vote for those two offices we will again be voting by ballot not sure if all candidates run again or just the top two are included in the next ballot.

thanks for any help you can provide. Our by-laws say when not specifically stated we will follow RR

All the candidates are included unless they withdraw.

All names are kept on the ballot. See RONR(10th ed.), p. 426, l. 33- p. 427, l. 5,

No. under Election of officers in our bylaws it says an election for President, vice President, Secretary and Treasurer will be held every year and is to be held on the first Tuesday in November and then says the election of officers to be decided by a simple majority of the vote. It just does not say anything about when no candidate gets the majority. Many members assumed it would be the candidate with the most votes but it was brought to the floor that majority is 50% plus 1 of all of the votes and we needed another vote

You're right, you needed to keep voting until one candidate received a majority of votes. So, new ballots all around, sharpen your pencils, and have at it. And don't forget to leave room for write-in votes for the two offices.

And just to be clear, a (simple) majority is "more than half", not "50% plus 1". That kind of math gets all icky.

Almost like Election Day.

Follow the cited pages of RONR for that process.

Majority means "more than half." Majority vote means "more than half of the votes cast." That's different than "half plus one," as seen in the example of 17 votes cast. Majority vote = 9. Half plus one = 9.5. So, you see, "half plus one" can be higher than a majority.
