Tim Wynn Posted November 10, 2010 at 01:28 AM Report Share Posted November 10, 2010 at 01:28 AM Can a motion be made to suspend a discussion ?A little clarity is needed to know exactly what you're asking and what you're intending to do. If you want to go directly to a vote, you can move the Previous Question. If you want to get rid of a motion that is being discussed without a direct vote on it, you can move to Postpone Indefinitely. If you want to stop debating a main motion and debate it later, you can move to Postpone to a Certain Time.If something urgent arises that needs immediate attention, you can move to Lay the pending motion on the Table.Which will it be? Chris Harrison Posted November 10, 2010 at 01:28 AM Report Share Posted November 10, 2010 at 01:28 AM Can a motion be made to suspend a discussion ?There is no parliamentary way to directly suspend debate (though it can be limited or stopped altogether-see RONR pp. 183-201). However, the debate can be suspended indirectly by adopting a motion temporarily disposing of the motion from which the debate spawned. Warning, some of those motions are debatable themselves.
