Guest Ann Posted November 14, 2010 at 07:12 PM Report Share Posted November 14, 2010 at 07:12 PM Our private organization by-laws specifically state that a member must be present to be nominated but not to accept office if elected. We hold nominations in October & November, and elections are held in December. If a member is nominated in October but is not present to accept, does the member have to be present in November and have to be re-nominated in November to accept that nomination, or can the member accept the nominbation made in October at the November meeting (or just inform the president prior to the November meeting that he or she accepts the nomination that was made at the October meeting). Also, is there anything in writing preventing all members copies of membership lists, including members addresses and telephone numbers? Thanks for your input.

I'm afraid you'll have to figure out what your bylaws mean. They can only be properly interpreted in their entirety and that's beyond the scope of this forum. It's also up to your organization to determine what personal information it distributes to the members but I would suggest you let the members "opt out" if they don't want their addresses and phone numbers given out. Better yet, make them "opt in" if they do. Nothing in RONR prohibits it but nothing in RONR authorizes it either.
Tim Wynn Posted November 14, 2010 at 09:28 PM Report Share Posted November 14, 2010 at 09:28 PM Our private organization by-laws specifically state that a member must be present to be nominated but not to accept office if elected. See RONR(10th ed.), p. 570-573 for some principles of interpretation. Keep in mind that, when voting by ballot, a member is free to vote for any eligible person, whether that person is nominated or not, unless your rules state otherwise. Also, is there anything in writing preventing all members copies of membership lists, including members addresses and telephone numbers? Thanks for your input.RONR doesn't have such a rule, but it doesn't give members a right to a copy such a list, either.
