Guest Lou Posted December 8, 2010 at 08:01 PM Report Share Posted December 8, 2010 at 08:01 PM I brought up a topic at our last monthly meeting and no motion was made because the others wanted input from a committee. I brought this up again at this month's meeting under unfinished business and was told it should fall under new business because there wasn't a motion made at the previous meeting. Is this correct. Guest lou Posted December 8, 2010 at 08:14 PM Report Share Posted December 8, 2010 at 08:14 PM So was the topic actually referred to a committee or was there no follow through in even getting the committee to take up the topic? The committee never met on the topic and I know I don't need their reccomendation to proceed. My question is does it need to be a motion to be brought up under unfinished business.

My question is does it need to be a motion to be brought up under unfinished business. If a motion wasn't made (and isn't still pending), it sounds like new business (if not an entirely new "topic") to me. Chris Harrison Posted December 8, 2010 at 08:39 PM Report Share Posted December 8, 2010 at 08:39 PM The committee never met on the topicSo was the topic actually referred to the committee and they just haven't met on it or was it never referred to them?and I know I don't need their reccomendation to proceed. That is not necessarily true. If the topic was referred to the committee then it is under their control and it would be out of order to consider it unless the committee was first discharged from further consideration of the topic (RONR pp. 299-304).My question is does it need to be a motion to be brought up under unfinished business.No. Depending on whether the topic was referred to the committee it would properly be dealt with during committee reports or new business. NoThen it was never properly before the assembly and would need to be made in New Business.
