Line of succession

Our Board consists of a President, VP, Secratary, Chaplin, Treasurer, Master at Arms and Trustee. Our President will be retiring prior to the end of his term. What is the natural line of succession from top to bottom. The VP is not interested in holding the position even on a temporary measure. Is he required to do so? If not and two or more current board members are interested in the position how is it filled? Is there a special election by the general membership or is the Board empowered to choose. Thank you for your interest.

Absent anything to the contrary in your organization's governing documents, your vice-president will automatically become president when your current president's resignation is accepted, and the general membership will need to conduct an election to fill the vacancy in the office of vice-president (I'm assuming the general membership elected your officers). The only "natural line of succession" is from vice-president to president.

And it might be fair to say that if the VP is not interested in being President, even temporarily for the unexpired portion of the President's term, he would (or should?) either A.) tender his resignation to VP as well now, or B.) to the office of President as soon as the current President's resignation is accepted. Otherwise, his is the President until that office comes up for election again, and in the case of B above, he is still President until his resignation is accepted.
