Guest Bob Posted March 1, 2011 at 03:33 AM Report Share Posted March 1, 2011 at 03:33 AM We have a committee chair who regularly says "motion sustained" when a motion carries. Is this appropriate? It seems to connote legal rather than parliamentary procedures.
Josh Martin Posted March 1, 2011 at 03:40 AM Report Share Posted March 1, 2011 at 03:40 AM Is this appropriate? No, this is not the correct term, and it should be avoided because the term has a particular usage in parliamentary law. The chair should say "adopted" or "carried" instead. It seems to connote legal rather than parliamentary procedures. The term "sustained" does have application in a parliamentary context, but it is used only in connection with an Appeal or an Objection to the Consideration of a Question.
