Guest Marni Posted January 5, 2018 at 03:11 AM Report Share Posted January 5, 2018 at 03:11 AM My church's bylaws state that "There shall be three regular business meetings in each year, to be held the fourth Saturday in January at 1:00 p.m., and the third Monday in May and October at 7:30 p.m." A major event in the community occurs on that fourth Saturday in January whereby it is believed that a lot of members would want to attend that community event and not come to the church's business meeting. Is there any way according to Robert's Rules of Order that this bylaw can be worked around so that we could hold this business meeting at a more suitable time? Guest Who's Coming to Dinner Posted January 5, 2018 at 03:26 AM Report Share Posted January 5, 2018 at 03:26 AM If you don't get a quorum, the assembled members can set an adjourned meeting for a later date when it is known that most members will be able to attend. Richard Brown Posted January 5, 2018 at 04:45 AM Report Share Posted January 5, 2018 at 04:45 AM (edited) All that is needed, really, is for a couple of members to show up, call the meeting to order and then set an adjourned meeting for whatever date and time has been agreed to in advance and then adjourn. Setting an adjourned meeting is one of the few things that can be done in the absence of a quorum. And if there is no need to conduct business other than the bylaws require a meeting, Just call the meeting to order and adjourn.
