HARLEEN Posted November 19, 2021 at 02:27 PM Report Share Posted November 19, 2021 at 02:27 PM (edited) 3 persons were appointed to bring back a slate of officers for the annual election in December. The committee chair submitted via message, names for 3 positions, but there are 5 positions up for election. Additionally, after the meeting it was discovered that everyone eligible to run for an office was not polled. No one said anything opposing the way it was presented during the meeting, but now 3 members want to challenge how things were done and want a special meeting held for a "redo". Nominations from the floor are allowed before voting in December. I think this will give everyone eligible the opportunity to be nominated or decline. Help! The nominating committee is free to conduct its business as it sees fit, except to the extent the committee has been instructed otherwise by the parent assembly or the organization's rules. No rule in RONR requires a nominating committee to poll everyone who is eligible to run for office. Whether or not to take that action is at the committee's discretion. It is a problem, however, that the committee has only nominated persons for three positions when there are five positions up for election. It is the nominating committee's duty to nominate persons for each open position. The committee should indeed meet again for the purpose of nominating persons for the remaining positions, if possible. The committee may also revisit its other nominations at that time if the committee wishes, but the committee is not required to do so. Yes, this is correct. The purpose of the nominating committee is not simply to receive and forward all nominations by interested persons. Rather, its duty is to nominate the persons who, in the committee's judgment, are the best choices for each open position. Additional persons may be nominated from the floor.
