Bhelms Posted November 26, 2022 at 07:41 PM Report Share Posted November 26, 2022 at 07:41 PM Our School board has adopted a rule that non members have to sign up 5 hours in advance if they want to speak at a meeting. Is this legal?
rulesasker Posted November 26, 2022 at 08:49 PM Report Share Posted November 26, 2022 at 08:49 PM This will depend on the rules adopted by the school board. Nothing in Robert's Rules prevents it, or even requires the board to allow non-members to speak at all.
Atul Kapur Posted November 26, 2022 at 08:54 PM Report Share Posted November 26, 2022 at 08:54 PM Whether it is legal is beyond the scope of this forum. @rulesasker's reply is accurate as far as RONR goes, but as it is a school board, there is almost certainly legislation that applies to it

Is this legal? It depends on the laws in your state. In the meantime, record the names of those who voted in favor of this rule, and remind them of their choice when elections roll around.
