Guest Joe O. Posted April 1, 2024 at 11:14 PM Report Share Posted April 1, 2024 at 11:14 PM As a volunteer fire department, we have applicants for membership complete a written application, complete a police background check, and meet with a review committee before they can be brought up to a vote of the membership. Members have asked if an applicant can be rejected by motion prior to this process. Would this be considered discriminatory practice, even if the applicant is not a member of a protected group? Secondly, should the practice of voting by the membership be discontinued in favor of a qualification-based application and a period of probation? Atul Kapur Posted April 1, 2024 at 11:52 PM Report Share Posted April 1, 2024 at 11:52 PM RONR has nothing to say on the process of granting membership. These are decisions for your department to make. On 4/1/2024 at 7:14 PM, Guest Joe O. said: Would this be considered discriminatory practice That sounds like a question for your lawyer.
