Guest Paula Posted May 16, 2024 at 04:32 PM Report Share Posted May 16, 2024 at 04:32 PM We have a 7 member board. Five members were present and 5 votes were cast. How many yay votes are required for a motion to pass? Is it 3 or 4?
Greg Goodwiller, PRP Posted May 16, 2024 at 04:46 PM Report Share Posted May 16, 2024 at 04:46 PM Two thirds of 5 is 3.33. Therefore, a two thirds vote with 5 present and voting requires 4 for adoption.
Richard Brown Posted May 16, 2024 at 06:42 PM Report Share Posted May 16, 2024 at 06:42 PM Agreeing with Dr. Goodwiller, an easy way to determine whether you have achieved a two-thirds vote is to determine if there are twice as many yes votes as no votes. If so, you have a two-thirds vote. Note: a vote of two-thirds of the entire membership or of the members present, rather than an ordinary two-thirds vote, is something altogether different. I am assuming, as I believe Dr. Goodwiller did, that you are inquiring about a regular "unqualified" two-thirds vote.
