In terms of the general meaning of what a member is, when a person becomes not a member, he no longer has the rights of membership.

Seems to me that, baring any bylaw provisions that apply (do you have any related ones?), the only way to resign a "life membership" (paid or not) is to cease to be alive.

That can indeed be "wrenching", especially to the next"

If, after all this resignation processing is completed, the person is truly a non-member for ANY length of time, then he is a nonmember in ALL ways.

He would have to join the organization per the bylaws' description of how one become"
