A ballot is, by definition, secret. The origin of the word stems from white and black balls that were used for voting.

There is such a thing as a "signed ballot" but that's just an unfortunate name for a roll-call vote.

They were on the ballot. It didn't make sense because we had to sign in on a list and also sign next to the names of any people we held proxies for. Then we were given the ballots in exchange for the proxies and had to write the addresses on them."
