Building Representatives

Elections for our Executive Board were held in April--The executive board is comprised of two co-presidents, VP, Treasurer , secretary and a building representative from each building in our school district. Prior to our elections, there was a challenge to the 2009-10 elections. Our year begins in September and ends in June. We do not meet or hold meetings in July or August. The challenge was not decided by our state election board until February. Part of the decision advised us to hold all elections for officers and building reps at the same time. The 2010-2011 elections were held on April 26, with all executive board members being elected a that time. The 2009-2010 executive board decided to put out ballots for all officers and 2 building representatives from each building for the 2010-2011 election. During nominations in March nothing was mentioned of having two building reps rather than one. Our bylaws state that there should be one building representative from each building. No official membership meetings were held between April 26 and now. The new board was announced on June 3 at the end of the year party--it was not an official meeting--no one called the meeting to order on that day. We are now beginning a new school year. The bylaws have never been changed from 1 building representative to two. The results of the election are sealed and can be reopened with the consent of the membership. Can we announce that the building representative receiving the majority of votes is considered as elected to the executive board for this year and that those who came in second are not?

"April"?

It is now August. That is a four-month delay.

And you want to announce the results of the election?

Prior to our elections, there was a challenge to the 2009-10 elections.

"Prior"?

What was the result of this prior challenge?

Our year begins in September and ends in June.

We do not meet or hold meetings in July or August.

The challenge was not decided by our state election board until February.

"February"?

You had (1.) some kind of challenge decided in February; (2.) regular elections in April.

So I hope the April 2010 election put the February decision moot, far in the past.

Part of the decision advised us to hold all elections for officers and building reps at the same time.

The 2010-2011 elections were held on April 26, with all executive board members being elected a that time.

Ah! So the February decision did influence the April election.

The mystery continues.

The 2009-2010 executive board decided to put out ballots for all officers and 2 building representatives from each building for the 2010-2011 election.

The new board was announced on June 3 at the end of the year party-

it was not an official meeting -

no one called the meeting to order on that day.

Say! This is a problem!

You've jumped outside of Robert's Rules of Order, by announcing something which wasn't final, by RONR standards.

This sticky wicket won't have a canned solution from The Book.

Q. Didn't you already announce the "results" in June at the "party"?

Q. You want to re-announce the June announcement?

Q. You have an outstanding violation of your bylaws, and want to ignore the qualification for office?

Makes sense to me. What else would you announce?

Though, from now on, one would hope that at least some of the members will have read the bylaws. These are educators we're talking about, right? Seems like they've got some homework to do.

Now, about those co-presidents . . .
