Filling the position of past president on a non profit board

How is it determined who should serve in the position of Past President on our board during the term when the current President-Elect is President?

The (immediate) past president is the person who was president just before the current president. It doesn't matter if he resigned, got arrested, or left the country. He's still the (immediate) past president.

By the way, if you have a vice-president, that person should have become president, not the president-elect.
