Kim Goldsworthy Posted February 21, 2011 at 06:41 PM Report Share Posted February 21, 2011 at 06:41 PM Could you please tell me under Roberts Rules of Order whether a vote is required after the president makes an appointment to a position?Easy.By default, no president can appoint anyone to anything.See The Book for the sole exception of a tellers committee. That's The Book.If you have bylaws or have a constitution, then it is possible that your own organization has granted your president the power to appoint (someone to something). But that is your own doing, not Robert's Rules of Order.Q. Do your bylaws grant any authority to your president, regarding appointments? If not, then the answer to your question is a solid, "No," a vote is not required AFTER the president makes an appointment, since he cannot even make appointments. So "after" is not a factor. Nor "before".
Guest J Greene Posted February 21, 2011 at 09:24 PM Report Share Posted February 21, 2011 at 09:24 PM Maybe. Can you give us some more details for a (hopefully) more helpful answer? In our organization, our president has appointed individuals to, for example, a finance committee and the organization does not get to vote whether we approve of the individual or not. He said that he has the right since he is appointing the person. Our bylaws do not address appointments.

Our bylaws do not address appointments.Well, then your President is making stuff up. RONR does not give the President the authority to make appointments, and apparently your rules don't either. The only way your President gets to appoint anyone is if your assembly authorizes him to do so through a motion. By default, the power to appoint members of committees rests with the general membership.
