Jayadev Posted March 26, 2011 at 12:19 PM Report Share Posted March 26, 2011 at 12:19 PM If there is no specific mention about how the amendment is carried out either with simple majority or two thirds majority of the assembly what is the general rule to amend an existing rule? Is simple majority OK to amend the existing rule? Thanks

David A Foulkes Posted March 26, 2011 at 12:31 PM Report Share Posted March 26, 2011 at 12:31 PM "The bylaws should always prescribe the procedure for their amendment, and such provision should always require at least that advance notice be given in a specified manner, and that the amendment be approved by a two thirds vote. If the bylaws contain no provision for their amendment, they can be amended at any business meeting by a two-thirds vote, provided that previous notice (see p 116) has been given; or, without notice, they can be amended at any regular meeting by vote of the majority of the entire membership." (RONR 10th Ed, p. 562 ll. 9-18)Do your bylaws include anything on how to amend the bylaws? If so, and they don't specify the voting requirement, then that's something to think about amending, once you figure out how.
