Resignation of elected officer prior to installation

We have by laws concerning the resignation of the president indicating that the first VP will assume the duties. However, we have a President elect who just resigned and installation is two weeks away. Does the first VP elect now move up or do we re elect a President? Our by laws also state that any office outside the Presidency will be filled by appointment of the Board of directors? So part two is does the current board or the incoming board appoint a new officer if the VP moves up?

Installation ceremonies are just, well, ceremonial, unless your bylaws have specific language that the terms of those officers actually begin at the installation ceremony.

Presuming that the terms have not yet begun, and further presuming that the resignation was accepted, or will be before that time.

Your election was completed, and all the officers (elect) took on their responsibilities at that time, even if their terms have not yet started. So you now need to follow your bylaws on filling vacancies. At the time that the terms begin (which is not clear from your question, but whenever that is) a vacancy will occur in the office of president that will be automatically filled in that instant by the (new) vice president, leaving a vacancy in the office of VP. So the Board should prepare to appoint a vice president.

If the resignation was not accepted, and will not be, before the terms of office begin, then the president elect will become president at that time, whether he shows up for the installation ceremony or not. Upon acceptance of the resignation, the VP will become president, and the rest is the same as above.
