David A Foulkes Posted July 12, 2011 at 11:02 AM Report Share Posted July 12, 2011 at 11:02 AM The Chair should not be making motions except in small board meetings (see pages 470-471). And in that case, for motions that require a second, seconds are not required. He gets no special privileges due to his position. Or her. That whole thing. Whatever. Tim Wynn Posted July 13, 2011 at 03:14 AM Report Share Posted July 13, 2011 at 03:14 AM I have a rather simple and straight forward question.Does a motion made by the Chairperson (or president) require a second? If a motion requires a second, it means that a member other than the maker of the motion must second it before it is placed before the assembly, regardless of the identity of the maker of the motion. However, usually when a chair is allowed to make motions (such as in a meeting of a small board or committee), seconds are not required at all, no matter who makes the motion. Tim Wynn Posted July 13, 2011 at 03:16 AM Report Share Posted July 13, 2011 at 03:16 AM The Chair should not be making motions except in small board meetings (see pages 470-471). And in that case, for motions that require a second, yes. Which motions would those be?

David A Foulkes Posted May 30, 2012 at 07:54 PM Report Share Posted May 30, 2012 at 07:54 PM Indeed, the 11th edition was not released until 2.5 months after my post of July 12, 2011. And I did not state the President can't make motions.
