Guest Guest Posted July 18, 2011 at 05:13 PM Report Share Posted July 18, 2011 at 05:13 PM During our last Board meeting, a member made a motion to take immediate action on an ongoing problem. The motion was seconded and there was a lot of "discussion". The Board member who made the motion became so frustrated with some of the Board members that he resigned and left the meeting. The motion was never voted on. Do we have an open motion or was the motion nullified when the Board member resigned?

If the meeting adjourned while the motion was pending, the motion should come up again as unfinished business under the heading Unfinished Business and General Orders at the next meeting (provided that the next meeting will be held within a quarterly time interval). If the next meeting will not be held within a quarterly time interval, the motion falls to the ground.
Gary Novosielski Posted July 18, 2011 at 07:05 PM Report Share Posted July 18, 2011 at 07:05 PM Once the motion is placed before the assembly, it belongs to the group, not to the individual mover (or seconder) so the resignation of an individual would have no effect on the motion. Incidentally, was the resignation formally accepted? If not, the member who submitted his resignation is free to withdraw it, and resume his seat.
